Newspaper Headlines

Is there a list of the most common words in headlines of newspaper articles?

Or at least a big listing of the actual headlines used in media articles? Is there somewhere online I could find this? I'm looking for the top 1000 or so words that are used in newspaper headlines. I am assuming the word 'the', 'a', etc. top the list, but want to know the rest because it may be slightly different from just a general top 1000 most common english words. My linguistics project needs this info!

Public Comments

  1. The, and, I, of are probably the most common words! Just kidding. Sorry. I really don't know.
  2. I'm not sure what the most common words would be for news headlines, but I would think that "the" and "a" wouldn't be among them. Headlines generally cut out the unnecessary article words like those (for example, "2 die in crash" or "Bush gives GOP leaders advice" or "Ex-jailer sentenced in inmate's death")... actually, looking through the headlines of my local paper, I'd say the words "in" or "on" are definitely common. Maybe also "for" and "of." But I wouldn't include "the" or "a." ETA: Since a lot of stories deal with deaths or law cases, I'd say add the words "dies" or "die," "charged," "death," "murder," "case." Morbid, but that's the news for you...
